World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15 is dedicated toward promoting a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons. Activities for this day help to raise awareness of cultural, social, economic and demographic processes that affect elder abuse and neglect.
The day was initiated in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The United Nations International Plan of Action also acknowledges the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
To learn more, the Collaboration Against Abuse, Neglect & Exploitation (CAANE) presents a free conference called Out of the Darkness 9am to 2pm on June 15 at Sinclair Community College in Dayton. This event includes professional workshops along with local and national speakers. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Ashley Kochel at 937-225-5750 or KochelA@mcohio.org by June 8.
