Ohio Aims to Once Again Take “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls”

August 6, 2025

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month in Ohio. To raise awareness of older adult falls and the many ways older Ohioans can minimize their risks, the Ohio Department of Aging and Area Agency on Aging, PSA 2 challenge all Ohioans to aim to take “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls.”  The campaign encourages individuals of all ages to walk at least one mile, either in a group or individually, for valuable exercise and an opportunity to learn about activities to engage in and local resources available to help prevent falls.

Throughout September, you can use the Agency step tracker to keep track of your miles. At the end of the month, report your steps on the Ohio Department of Aging’s website to be included in the official 10 million steps total.

Falls are an epidemic among older adults, with one in three Ohioans age 65+ experiencing a fall each year and falls being the leading cause of injury. The cause of falls varies, but risk factors include lower body weakness, chronic health conditions, poor nutrition, use of multiple medications, reduced vision, home hazards and more. In addition to the physical toll, falls and the fear of falling contribute to depression, hopelessness, and isolation.

Falls are not a normal part of aging, and most falls can be prevented. Increased physical activity, like walking several times a week, is one strategy to lower the risk. “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls” aims to spread the word that simple changes can make a big difference.
