Vaccination is Vital Protection Against New Variant

Covid-19 transmission rates are high again throughout the Miami Valley and vaccinations are strongly encouraged to help protect yourself and others. The Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) and Ohio Department of Health (ODH) joined forces last week to urge Ohioans to stay up-to-date with vaccination boosters for maximum protection against the virus.

ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff noted that news is milder this winter but about 2,500 Americans and 90 Ohioans die from Covid-19 every week. Much of the country is now experiencing a new, highly contagious variant known as XBB.1.5. He urges people who are age 65 and older, or immunocompromised, and/or live with chronic conditions to get the updated booster since they are at greater risk for serious illness or death. The booster shots bolster immunity that naturally wanes over time from earlier shots. Masking, physical distancing, and booster shots combine to help protect against viral spread throughout your home, work and community.
