One in three Ohioans over age 60 will fall this year, and that fall could lead to a life-changing injury. However, falls are not a normal part of aging, and most falls can be prevented. Today – on National Falls Prevention Awareness Day – Area Agency on Aging staff joined the STEADY U Ohio initiative in taking 10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls to raise awareness of the many things we can do to minimize the risk of falling.
There are many fall prevention resources available to Ohioans. Preventing falls is discussed in week 2 of the Healthy U/chronic disease workshop, and you can also attend A Matter of Balance, another evidence-based workshop offered throughout our region. There are helpful tips and resources on the STEADY U website. And the National Council on Aging recently released an animated video with six steps to prevent a fall – share it with the older adults in your life!
