June 1981 is notable for the first case of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) announced in the United States. The impact of HIV/AIDS over the last 43 years has been unquestionably profound in numerous ways especially affecting the health and well-being of our aging and older populations. The National Institute on Aging indicates, “Nearly half of people living with HIV in the United States are age 50 and older” and although many were diagnosed in their younger years, “thousands of older people get HIV every year.” With prevention strategies and techniques, including PEP and PrEP, so accessible, why is the CDC reporting that researchers estimate that 70% of people living with HIV will be 50 or older by 2030?

Participants will be able to:

  • Briefly review the history and impact of AIDS and HIV in the United States.
  • Explore realities, issues and concerns for older adults living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Recognize prevention methods and how to meet and address such with older adults.
  • Identify credible and helpful resources for further learning.
