The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) designated Ohio as the 13th Age-Friendly state at the Ohio Department of Aging’s Policy Summit on Healthy Aging. On September 17, the summit was hosted to discuss policies and create a statewide strategy to support healthy aging. Governor Mike DeWine opened the event, expressing the impact that our older citizens have on communities throughout Ohio.
“Older adults are the heart of our communities. They enrich our lives with their unique experiences, their wisdom and their perspectives. I know firsthand the immense value that older Ohioans bring to our towns, our cities and our economy,” said DeWine.
AARP and the World Health Organization (WHO) partner to recognize states and communities that commit to being great places to age. In the state of Ohio, there are 36 AARP-certified Age-Friendly Communities, including 15 located within our nine-county region.
“The services and programs we have unveiled over the last several years are taking our roadmap and putting it into action,” AGE Director Ursel J. McElroy said. “I could not be prouder to receive this designation from AARP, and I look forward to continuing our progress to make sure all Ohioans can age comfortably in their communities.”
