Check on People and Pets in Winter

January 22, 2026

During winter temperatures, take time to check on older neighbors and family members and keep pets indoors. Ensure supplies for warmth and safety with bottled water for continued hydration, food that doesn’t require cooking, warm blankets and clothing, enough quantities of medications on-hand, pet food and supplies, flashlights and extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, etc. Check regularly throughout the cold weather to ensure their safety and help to clear their walkways and driveways if possible.

The Ohio Department of Aging provides tips on checking on neighbors and on emergency preparedness for older adults and caregivers.
